All about the Gs

We are hearing about 1G, 2G and 3G a lot and we know that the mobile service providers are shifting to 3G. The Auction and use of 3G Spectrum is widely debated nowadays. Let us see what is the definitions of these terms.
1G is the First Generation Mobile Communication system. The 1G system was analog and circuit switched. If we wiew it today 1G system were of poor Voice links, unreliable handoff, Low capacity, and poor security. 1G service is not developing any more. The 1G spectrum is beign used to develop 2G and 3G spectrums. 2G is the second generation mobile technology. 2G digital encoding protocol is widely used for CDMA and GSM systems. They offer auxiliary services such as data, fax and SMS. Most 2G protocols offer different levels of encryption.

2.5G service is not so popular. 2.5G protocols extend 2G systems to provide additional features such as packet-switched connection (GPRS) and enhanced data rates (HSCSD, EDGE).

3G is the latest technology in mobile world. In mobile telephony, third-generation protocols support much higher data rates. 3G will support full-motion video, video-conferencing and full Internet access.
3GPP, 3rd Generation Partnership Project, technical standards group focusing on GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, and related technologies and 3GPP2, 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2, A technical standards group focusing on CDMA2000 and related technologies are there to standardise the services.

4G is coming soon. 4G is somewhat vague term used to describe wireless mobile radio technologies that offer faster data rates than current 3G (third generation) technologies.4G networks are also more data-centric and based on standard Internet technologies such as IP. Voice service is typically provided using a special form of VoIP. WiMAX (the trade name for a family of new technologies related to the IEEE 802.16 wireless standards) and LTE are examples of 4G technologies.
